Cast Iron Bathtub Reglazing
Cast Iron and Steel Bathtubs
Cast iron bathtubs and steel bathtubs tend to look the same, but they are different. Take your fist and knock on the side of the tub. If it feels and sounds like you’re hitting a solid rock, it’s probably Cast iron. If it goes dong or feels a bit hollow, it’s perhaps steel. There’s not much of a difference in the refinishing process; however, the conditions will vary widely. If a cast iron tub is old, it tends to get what we call rain grooves or erosion, like the side of a mountain after significant rain. Deep grooves are running down the hill. The tracks will show badly after a high gloss refinish. If there’s chipping or other wear, it needs to be filled in, like dents on a car.
On a steel tub, the main problem is the thinness of the steel. Once there’s a chip, the rust will grow and start a full-fledged rot. The rust is alive. Sometimes very difficult to remove all of it. Again, this all has to be removed and filled in before we can do the refinishing. We’ve taken some pretty bad tubs and made them like new ones, but the price will reflect the work’s degree.
Preparing for your Reglazing Project
Note: Your surface will need 24 hours to dry after the completion of the project, before using.
- The project space MUST have running water and electricity on the day of the project. (We cannot use an extension cord from an adjacent unit)
- All faucet drips and drain leaks must be repaired prior to the project date. (Let us know if you need our Plumbing service)
- Remove everything from the bathroom prior to our arrival (i.e..Soaps, shampoos, trashcans, towels, plungers, everything on the vanity countertop, all pictures hanging on the walls, rugs, hanging plants, shower curtains) If the project is not in a bathroom, remove all items within a 10 foot radius around the area which will be worked on.
- Give the bathroom a good wipe down removing dust, hair and spider webs before the technician arrives, so that he has a great space to be able to create beautiful results. Anything in the air can settle in the finish creating dust bumps or larger particles.
- Most work should be completed, if doing any remodeling, prior to any reglazing.
- No other work should be going on inside or outside on the day we are working.
- We use Low VOC, FDA and EPA approved products. However, there is an odor that is offensive to some people and animals. When possible, we do ventilate. Some bathrooms have no window to vent and this increases odor. There are no dangerous chemicals to be concerned about. It is Pleasdrying, but you should stay out of the bathroom for most of the day.
- If you have received an ESTIMATE over the phone, it is just that. An ESTIMATE. We are relying on information provided by you or maybe pictures that cannot possibly tell the whole story. We DO NOT try to upsell. If there is additional work not accurately seen or discussed, the technician has the final say on the work required and the price of the job.
