The thing about gas lines is, they tend to last a long time until there is an earthquake. The first one that goes is the service line (meter to the house)
Most of them are as old as your house, buried underground, and the type of piping does not pass code today, for a good reason. It is either a galvanized pipe or black pipe, slowly being eaten by the earth coverage.
A common concern is a leak. The gas company comes out and shuts off the meter and tells you to call a plumber. They came out because you smelled gas or your consumption is too high. We have a gas sniffer to locate the area affected. We will have to turn on the gas to find it. If it’s the main, underground, there’s no repairing this. It’s as thin as a beverage can. We would give an estimate for replacement.
Another common question is, about adding an appliance. Convert electric to a gas stove, bbq, etc. Is there enough gas left in the original piping in the house to accommodate an additional device? When they size gas piping, they only install the pipe big enough to feed the initial plans’ existing gas appliances. When someone buys a tankless water heater and puts it where the old storage type was, it only gets warm. A typical tankless water heater needs 199,000 BTU’s, where the previous storage type only needed 35,000. You’ll need to run a new pipe sized appropriately for the meter’s distance and the new tankless water heater’s consumption.
